Description

The ion-exchange membrane electrolyzer performs cyclic electrolysis of saturated brine. Chlorine gas (Cl₂) generated at the anode and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) produced at the cathode react in the sodium hypochlorite storage tank to form a sodium hypochlorite solution.

Electrolytic Reaction Process:

Reaction Principle: NaCl+H2​O+DC→NaClO+H2​

Electrode Reactions: Anode: 2Cl−−2e−→Cl2​↑

Cathode: 2H2​O+2e−→H2​↑+2OH−

Solution Reaction: 2NaOH+Cl2​→NaCl+NaClO+H2​O

Chemical Reaction Equations:

Anode (oxidation, electrons lost): 2Cl−−2e−=Cl2​↑

Cathode (reduction, electrons gained): 2H++2e−=H2​↑

Reaction ① (electrolysis): 2NaCl+2H2​O→(electrolysis) → 2NaOH+H2​↑+Cl2​↑

Reaction ② (solution reaction): 2NaOH+Cl2​→NaCl+NaClO+H2​O

Overall reaction (① + ②): NaCl+H2​O→NaClO+H2​↑
